Too many children are falling behind in
their early years – and the effects can last a lifetime.
Today in Wales, the
poorest children are twice as likely to score below average for language
development at age five. They start school struggling to speak in full sentences or understand simple instructions
from parents, teachers and friends.
Many of them
struggle to catch up, making it harder for them to do well at school, or
succeed in the world of work.
That’s why we’re
calling on the Welsh government to ensure all children can access high quality support
in their early years. This means giving
more support to parents, and making sure staff are highly skilled to
deliver world-class early learning and childcare.

Every child deserves the best start in life.
But today in Wales, too many children aren’t getting the support they need to
fulfil their potential.
skills are the essential building blocks that children need to understand the
world around them and go on to thrive. That’s why we’re working directly
with parents to help them to support their children’s learning at home through
programmes like Eat,
Sleep, Learn, Play!
It’s proven that
high quality early years education and care make a big difference to children’s
language too, particularly for the poorest children. Access to a team of caring
and highly skilled staff, led by a graduate-level practitioner, could transform
children’s early language skills and readiness for school.
We’re calling for
the Welsh government to invest in children’s early years by supporting parents
and making sure staff can deliver world-class early learning and childcare.
Join our campaign to improve childhoods
today and boost children’s prospects for the future.
