Child poverty in the UK has reached a devastating new high. 4.5 million children are now living in poverty – the direct result of political choices.
The government’s own analysis shows that upcoming welfare cuts will push another 50,000 children into hardship.
Without urgent action, this will be the first Labour government to preside over a significant rise in child poverty — a record no one should accept. But we can change this.
We are calling on the UK Government to take decisive action to lift children out of poverty by:
- Scrapping the two-child limit and benefit cap, which unfairly denies children the support they need.
- Commit to a ‘Child Lock’ that ensures that child-related benefits rise in line with wages or average earnings (whichever is higher), so families don’t fall further behind.
- Delivering real support in the upcoming child poverty strategy, with policies that tackle the core drivers of child poverty.
Families are being forced into impossible choices—parents skipping meals, children going to school hungry, and essential costs becoming unaffordable. No child should grow up in poverty.
