Suleka was tiny at birth – “the size of my hand”, says her mum Halima.
Then at three months old, Suleka’s became desperately ill. “She was severely malnourished and couldn’t even open her eyes,” says Halima.
Halima took Suleka to a hospital several hours away, where she was diagnosed with pneumonia and malnutrition, and treated with antibiotics.
Suleka and Halima stayed at the hospital for nearly three weeks. But Halima worried about her other children, Abdullahi and Irfan, who were being looked after by a neighbour – particularly Abdullahi, who was also suffering from pneumonia. And she worried about having to borrow money to pay for Suleka’s medicine after leaving hospital.
Halima and Suleka are now back at home. But Halima worries her children will get pneumonia again. And she worries that Suleka is still too thin. “I don’t want my child to get sick anymore,” she says.
